Cerebral Palsy

cerebral palsyCerebral palsy is the general term for a number of neurological conditions that affect movement and co-ordination, caused by a problem in the parts of the brain responsible for controlling muscles. The condition can occur if the brain develops abnormally or is damaged before, during or shortly after birth.

Cerebral palsy patients normally experience abnormal muscle tone, reflexes, or motor development and coordination issues. There can be joint and bone deformities and contractures and classical symptoms include spasms, involuntary movements, unsteady gait, balance problems and decreased muscle mass. Scissor and toe walking are common with those who are able to walk.

How Ilkley Physio Will Help Your Cerebral Palsy Needs

We arrange an initial assessment with the client, and anyone else who they may want there, in their own home. We then chat over their history, what difficulties they may have and how they generally manage their day-day life. We then discuss what they would like to achieve through their physiotherapy. Following an observed and a physical assessment which looks at the clients abilities and difficulties, including active and non active ranges of movement, strength and coordination. We then (in conjunction with the client and support team)come up with a short term, medium term and long term plan. This may include regular physiotherapy input, carer support and teaching of basic handling and movement techniques and advice on equipment, gym and /or hydrotherapy benefits.

Here’s what Nathan had to say about his experience with Ilkley Physiotherapy:

male-silhouette-270x270“I have cerebral palsy, use a wheelchair and communicate using an AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) device, which I operate using a switch. I have had physiotherapy with Jane for the past 12 years, which during the past 4 years have become regular weekly sessions.

My physiotherapy is specific to my needs and tailored to suit me. I enjoy my physiotherapy sessions because Jane is always nice and works hard to make sessions fun as well as productive. I would recommend Ilkley physiotherapy to anybody with cerebral palsy because it is the best physiotherapy I have had. Read More >>
